Adding CF Meetup Events to Your Own Calendar

Would you like to be able to easily add a given CF meetup event to your own calendar, whether using Outlook, iCal, Google, or Yahoo? Here's how.

A CF Meetup member asked me yesterday if I could please add an attachment to the meetup meeting announcements that would allow him to easily add the event to his calendar. That's a great idea, of course. Unfortunately, the CF meetup is run from a site called meetup.com, a commercial service (for connecting people in thousands of groups). They don't currently offer such a means for me to add a calendar attachment.

But I did bring it to their support team, and they pointed out something I'd never noticed, so I want to share it with you.

It turns out that on the page for each event there is a link on the right saying, "Add this meeting to your calendar", and it offers links to get calendar downloads for Outlook, iCal, Google, and Yahoo calendars.

I've asked them about perhaps enabling us to more easily add those as attachments to the email sent out about each meeting, or at least to add text for meeting organizers in case, like me, they don't notice the feature.

They may not be persuaded, so I have modified the meeting announcements so that, going forward, there will be text at the bottom of each message pointing out these calendar links. Some long-time members may not have thought to read to the bottom, though, which is why I'm sending along this notice.

Thanks for your continued membership in the CF meetup.
